Trapped in a superstore by a series of escalating disasters, including a monster hailstorm and terrifying chemical weapons spill, brothers Dean and Alex learned how to survive and worked together with twelve other kids to build a refuge from the chaos. But then strangers appeared, destroying their fragile peace, and bringing both fresh disaster and a glimmer of hope.
Knowing that the chemical weapons saturating the air outside will turn him into a bloodthirsty rage monster, Dean decides to stay in the safety of the store with Astrid and some of the younger kids. But their sanctuary has already been breached once. . . .
Meanwhile, Alex, determined to find their parents, heads out into the darkness and devastation with Niko and some others in a recently repaired school bus. If they can get to Denver International Airport, they might be evacuated to safety. But the outside world is even worse than they expected. . . .
You know what? I feel like this book was just way too short! 212 pages is just not enough. The book was really good and I definitely enjoyed it, but I wanted more :) More, more, MORE! I plowed through this book. It was so action packed and fast paced. I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book to see what would happen. I also liked how this book was split into two POVs. I felt like it was need. Following the kids on the bus, in Alex's POV, really kept us in the loop on what was happening on the outside. I felt like if this book had been in just Dean's POV, like book one, then I might not have enjoyed it as much because not all of the kids were together.

I felt like so much happened in this book that kept you in suspense. So many awesome action packed scenes! I also really like how the kids get into survival mode and protect one another. The bond that they have to each other, whether they like the person or not, is really admirable. I sort of became a family in this book and really showed that they would stick together through anything. I do think I enjoyed reading from Alex's pov in this book because so much happened in his tellings. Interesting things happen when Dean was speaking, but all that much. I do like both brothers though.

I still don't know how I feel for some of the characters though. Niko, Astrid and Jake are still mysteries to me. I don't know if I like Astrid or Jake, but Niko is borderline half and half with me. Sometimes I like him, but then sometimes I don't. The character that grew on me the most in this book was Sahalia. I think she really came to mature as a character :) I would definitely recommend giving this series a try if you want something fast paced and action packed. I am definitely enjoying them. I can't wait to see what happens in book 3.

  2. I have heard countless good things about Monument 14, so I am very excited to see how this series turns out for me. I love action packed scenes, especially where the main characters form a bond because of it. Hopefully, the rest of the characters will grow on you too, in the next book! Glad you enjoyed this, Janina! Great review! :D

  3. That is short. This sounds so good. I hate when books I love are to short.

  4. Ohh, after waiting an entire eternity, we only get 200 pages? Talk about unfair! Nevertheless, I really liked Alex in book 1 so I'm glad we're getting his POV as well, and I can't wait to get my hands on this one.
Thanks for the lovely review, Janina!
