The Pledge by Kimberly Derting
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Synopsis
In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.
Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.
My thoughts
This book was good! It was about a country where the different classes spoke a different language. No one was aloud to speak that class' language, but Charlie could understand all the languages. And that basically how the book begins, with Charlie struggle to keep her secret or face death by the queen.
I loved this book! It was such a quick read, i think i finished this book in a day.. I couldn't put it down. The character were great. Each and everyone of them. Charlie, of course, was tough. She didn't put up with a lot of things that most of the people did. But then we also saw those softer sides of her. Max! Loved him! Made my day when i was reading about his character. He's caring, funny, strong, and tough minded, which i like. Max and Charlie's relationship got a bit annoying at times. Sometimes it seen Charlie would try to play hard to get, which i didn't really like. But other than that i really like their relationship.
Overall, great book!
So you really liked this? It wasn't too confusing? I've been hearing mixed reviews and wasn't sure if I was going to read it. I liked her Body Finder's series so I kind of had high hopes for this one.
