He spent more than a thousand years imprisoned in hell…Taste of Darkness was a very refreshing read for me. I remember reading book one and ended up really enjoying it, but I have to say that I definitely liked book two a little bit better. I found that I enjoyed being with the characters a lot and I absolutely loved the romance. Also, the fact that there are dragon shifters in this book just made my day. I flew through Taste of Darkness in almost one sitting and ended up finishing it in a day. Considering the story follows different set of characters than book one, you could definitely read this one as a standalone, but I'd recommend reading book one because that's where the characters were first introduced.
Drake is an ancient dragon shifter, one of the most powerful beings in existence, but a millennium trapped in utter darkness has left him ill-equipped for modern society. If it wasn’t for Victoria, the sweet female brave enough to befriend him, he’d be lost. She’s smart and gorgeous and everything he never dared dream of during his years of agonizing loneliness. He may not have anything to offer her, but one thing he knows for sure: he’d die to keep her safe.
Only to fall into the heaven of her touch.
Victoria is a wolf shifter, healer of the Stavros pack. She’s seen a lot, but she’s never met anybody quite like Drake, the fiery, fascinating shifter who can blaze through the skies unseen by mere mortals. He’s lost, dangerous, and the last male she should fall in love with, but the more time she spends helping him navigate modern life, the deeper—and hotter—their connection becomes. She’s thrilled when they finally locate his family, but reuniting with his people plunges them both into unimaginable danger. It’s a race against the clock trying to figure out who wants them dead and who they can trust, especially when the threat is closer than they ever imagined.
The characters we follow in the story are Victoria and Drake and I really liked them both. Drake has not had an easy life. He's a dragon shifter and don't know if there are any of his kind left or if he has any family. Most believe that his kind were extinct until he escaped. At the age of 12 he was sacrificed and trapped in hell for over 1000 years. Now four months after his escape he's settled with a pack that's been helping him out and they've taken him in and treated him like family. He doesn't really have any memories of what happened to him before he was trapped in hell, but slowly things are starting to come back to him. I felt really really bad for Drake. He's in this new world and was taken at the age of 12. Over a thousand years later, things are completely different to him and nothing is the same. Even though Drake was a tough guy, he was still very innocent in certain things and he was also very sweet. You know, one of those, I'm nice until you piss me off kind of guys. Victoria is a wolf shifter and is kind of sheltered by the pack. I liked the fact that she wasn't a push over. But she, like Drake, was also very kind and the two of them together made me happy.
I think the romance in the book is what made the story. I honestly thought it was the cutest thing. Drake being so innocent and so outwardly caring warmed my little heart. I thought the two were perfect for each other. I think this is one of the nicest romances that I've read about in a while. But don't get me wrong, there was all kinds of action and drama going on within the book. The person that sacrifice Drake when he was 12 is not happy that he's escaped and is out to sacrifice him again. Poor guy didn't even get the chance to settle in before things started to go down. Overall, I thought this was an awesome story. It was an easy read to get into and I finished it in almost one sitting.
Yay when sequels top the previous installments :) And whoop for a good romance! That's always a big plus with any read ;) Also, Drake sounds wonderful. You said that he's nice until you piss him off. HAAAA. It reminds me of Kiss the Sky, my beloved Connor Cobalt and him hurting Scott :D LAWL! That was fun :D Yay for a sweet romance and a great plot to support it :) I'm glad you had fun with this, Janina!
ReplyDeleteThe romance sounds wonderful and glad to hear that it was refreshing.
ReplyDeleteAHHH I haven't read this book or even started this series but you make me want ot pick it up BECAUSE THERE IS A REALLY AWESOME ROMANCE AND I NEED AN AWESOME ROMANCE RIGHT NOW! lol! Love that this one exceeded your expectations and raised the bar the first book set! Heopfully the third one is awesome, too!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, it's what you said about the romance that makes me want to take a chance on this one. I mean.. I haven't had all that much luck with the author in the past (the highest I've rated a book I read by her was 3) but... I am curious. Plus dragon shifters! :D I have read a sum total of one book that deals with them (Dragos?? I think that's what it was called) and I am starting to wonder if I should explore more.
ReplyDeleteFantastic review, Janina!! :)
