1. Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.
Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”
But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

The Rules was a very interesting read that I liked. It was different from a lot of books that I've been reading lately. I loved the idea of Ariane being a hybrid (half human/half alien). It was definitely an interesting combo. The writing style of the author was easy to read and follow, which I found I liked as well :) I did feel as though the book could have been better in some aspects, but overall I thought the book was pretty good! I receive a eARC from Netgalley for review. All thoughts are my honest opinion!

Ariane was an enjoyable character. She wasn't best, but I did like her. She had five rules to live by and each is not an easy thing to ignore. Ariane went about life being as invisible as possible and staying in the background. I found Ariane intriguing from the very beginning because I wanted to know more about her and the things she was capable of doing. Her being an experiment at GTX, she went through so much as a child. Being poked and prodded with needles, having no understanding of true human behavior, being trained to kill, and not even comprehending fully of what's being done to it. I sympathized with her. So I was really glad when Zane came into the picture. I really liked him! I didn't think I would care for him because he was your popular jock who hung with the 'mean girl' of the school. But he was not what I expected, which is a good thing. He was kind and understanding towards Ariane. And the connection between the two was awesome :) But let me also say that Zane call Ariane's friend out. I did not like Jenna at all. She was so selfish and only thought of herself! I felt she got what she deserved and I didn't feel an ounce of sympathy for her. (I just had to let that out!)

I really enjoyed the romance aspect of the book. Like I said before, the connection between Ariane and Zane was simple, but sweet and I really enjoyed it. There were also some great action moments, but I wish there was a little bit more. At times, I felt like there was too much explaining going on and not enough interaction. I mean, that not completely a bad thing, since it helps to figure out why Ariane is the way she is and what she is, but I needed more. But, I can't wait for the sequel to find out what happens next! I will definitely be continuing on with series :)

  7. I'm very interested in the half human/half alien thing. I've never read a book with a character like that. I love that the connection between Ariane and Zane worked out for you. I've read a few books with disappointing romances lately. So that definitely makes me happy. I might just give this a try. :)
