Seventeen is a life changing age for Emma Wise.
As her family's sole survivor in a car crash, she is left with a broken arm and a few scrapes and bruises. But these are only outward marks; inside, her heart is broken and the pieces scattered.
Whisked away to Alaska, to an aunt she’s never met, Emma starts over. Secrets unveil themselves and now…she doesn't even know who or what she is.
A centuries old prophecy places Emma in the heart of danger. Creatures of horrifying and evil proportions are after her, and it will take Emma, her aunt, and six, gorgeously captivating Guardians to keep her safe. But, if she can survive until her eighteenth birthday... things will change.
I've actually been really curious about this book for awhile now and when I saw it on Netgalley I had to request it. Going into this book, we meet a girl named Emma who recently was the only survivor of an accident that killed both her Mother and Father. She wakes up in the hospital and finds out she has this long lost aunt and is to be shipped the next day to Alaska to live with this aunt she didn't even know she had. Right away I was curious of all the things that were to come. So many secrets went on in this book that kept me intrigued in the story.

When it comes to characters, I wouldn't say that any of them was spectacular and I did have a few problems with them. The main character, Emma, was annoying. In the beginning I like her and thought she was okay and wanted to get to know her more, but I found that certain things she did was either unrealistic or just all out annoying. For one, Emma asked questions at the wrong moments. If someone is saving your life, why are questioning them? Who cares about their name? You should be ESCAPING! If they say run, you RUN! I just don't get it. Also the reactions she had to certain situations was completely unrealistic to me. I can't go into more details about it because it would involve spoilers, so I'm just going to leave things at that. Emma had a connection to Kade from the very beginning. There relationship would have been 'forbidden' if anything had ever developed. I would say that the character development is what I had a problem with the most because I felt it was lacking.

But with that being said, I did enjoy the story overall. It was a short, but fast paced read. It was extremely action packed which made things fun to read and also the bickering characters was a nice touch to the book. A lot of secrets came to light which made the story very interesting. I didn't feel there was much romance to the book, but there was a connection between the two characters. Overall, I thought it was a light and fun read.

  1. What a pretty cover. I have never heard of this one before but it sounds like an interesting story. Too bad that the main character was annoying - it's always a turn off. Great review Janina :)

  2. She does sounds annoying! And I hate when an author makes characters unrealistic. Just because its fiction, doesn't mean characters shouldn't act like real people. At least a little bit. :)

  4. Lol at her not running and asking questions instead. That's pretty funny and I bet equally as frustrating. But glad some good secrets saved the book for you! Love your review ;)

  6. Usually, I won't like a book as much if the characters aren't great, and it's a shame the characters in this one don't seem like really good ones.

    1. I know. I hate when I'm not able to connect with a character. It makes the experience not as exciting as it could be for me! But I'm glad I still enjoyed the book
