Too many secrets. Not enough time.
Nick Merrick is supposed to be the level-headed one. The peacemaker. Since it’s just him and his three hotheaded brothers against the world, that’s a survival tactic.
But now he’s got problems even his brothers can’t help him survive.
His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn’s dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he’d rather shove back into the dark.
He can feel it—-the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out that sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace.

Breathless was an interesting read and twist in the Elemental series by Brigid Kemmerer. I adore this series to pieces! I love finding out all the about each of the Merrick Brothers and I've always been curious about Nick. I've never really liked him all that much, but found that I've always wanted to get into his mind to find out more about him. And this novella definitely helped me figure out some things about him. Thanks so much to Netgalley for providing me with an eARC! All thoughts are my honest opinion.

Nick, to me, has always been a wild card in my eyes. He's the quiet, peace making brother, but the quiet ones are always a mystery. In Storm, he caught my attention, but in Spark I saw a different side to him that kind of turn me off, but I wanted to see what was going on in the mind of Nick. And he definitely had a lot going on. Nick struggles with trying to step out of his twin brother's shadow and being himself. I really sympathized with in that aspect because it much be difficult being to compared to someone else on a daily basis. And then we had the big 'reveal' which the synopsis kind of give it away. Eh, it wasn't that big of a shock to me, but I did find it interesting. But, the ending didn't leave me feeling as though he was sure about himself.

Quinn is over the top, but I really feel for her and her situation at home. He relationship with her family is not a good one and she seems so confused to me. I would really like to see how she turns out! And Adam was really sweet.

I know novellas are suppose to be short, but I feel like it ended way to fast! I needed more, maybe just 50 pages lol We learned so much about Nick and Quinn in a small amount of pages that it felt rushed. But overall, I really enjoyed Nicks story and was glad to find out more about him!

  1. I'll tackle this series this summer. I must. I have seen the reviews for it all over the sphere. I really must see what's this all about. I'm sorry you didn't get more but I know you'll enjoy the next book in this series :)

  2. It def did end too fast. Sorry that it wasn't as good as you wanted. I actually loved being in his head. I think that the event that you mentioned he did go too far, but I think they all have and that is kinda the point. They are full elementals, and they have to learn control!
Anyways, glad you enjoyed learning more about him :)

    1. These novellas always feel so short! But I think I saw on goodreads there's a book four and it's about Nick! Let me check again!

  3. Him, it does sound like this one is too short. Like not everything was resolved, which I hate. I will still read it but now I am apprehensive.

  4. AHHHHH.....I am reading this right now, and I can't wait to see what everyone has been talking about. I love Brigid's work, and Nick is definitely a fav of mine. I can't wait to get his complete story but I guess this novella will have to do for now. I can't wait to meet this Adam character. Plus, although a lot of people sympathized with Quinn, honestly I didn't really see her with Nick. I found her to be annoying, so we'll how she turns out by the time I finish this.

Great review, Janina! Glad you enjoyed this! :D
