Beautiful, Mysterious, Dangerous. High school junior, Grace Waters, calls the new students the très beaux, or lovely ones. After swimming under the stars with these enigmatic teenagers, she becomes enchanted with their curious ways. They are like people in a dream--mesmerizing with powers that only Grace sees.
Soon she finds herself falling in love with gorgeous Laurent and his entrancing songs. As she tries to figure him out, her feelings intensify. But now she has put her life in grave danger and only Laurent can save her.
I really tried my best to finish this book. I really did! I made 52% into the book before I finally couldn't take it anymore and had to put the book down. I've really been trying to finish books I start lately, but I just couldn't with this one. There were too many faults and I honestly can't come up with anything positive to say. I went into the book really excited because I've really been into these kind of stories, but...

The first thing that turned me off about the book was the lack of character development. Since I made it halfway into the book, I should at least know something about the main character, Grace, besides the fact that she likes to surf, loves the water, and has 'reckless' side, which I saw none of by the way. Oh yeah, she likes to drive fast! Really?! Grace's best friend, whose name I don't remember, had more potential than she did because she was actually an okay character. She had life to her, if that makes any sense, and Grace was kind of boring.

The thing that made me completely stop reading was the 'romance'. There wasn't even romance, it was more like stalking. OMG! Seriously, this annoyed me the most. Grace and Laurent. Laurent is the love interest and he was a bore also. Laurent's name or Grace referring to Laurent had to have happened over 300 times in the amount of the story that I read, I swear to you. I don't know for sure, but every single page he was referred to. I got so tired of hearing about Laurent who we know nothing about besides the fact that he pops up out of nowhere and has 'powers'. During this entire time they only spoke maybe 3 complete sentences to each other. THREE, if that! And that was half the book!

No seriously, this is where I drew the line with the book and why I had to stop reading.

But, his fingers swiftly intersected. He touched the tip of my nose with his pointer finger and thumb and pulled something off. My eyes widened. “What was it?” I demanded. His body tightened and he scooted away from me slightly. With a devilish glint in his eyes, he glanced past me, and then, to my surprise, he chuckled. “It was nothing.” Maybe I was wrong, but I got the feeling he liked teasing me. “What?” I was confused. “Then why did you take it?” He raised an eyebrow as his expression became serious. “It was an angel kiss.” He was sitting up particularly straight; his back was tense which gave me the impression that it was uncomfortable for him to be close to me. “An angel kiss?” I asked, astounded. “Yes.” I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. “People call them freckles.” He lifted his eyes upward before reconnecting with me. Now I rolled my eyes and exhaled in exasperation. “You can’t take a freckle off my face.” I laughed lightly.

-Oh, I take back the 3 sentence thing. This was how many sentences they ever spoke to each other. And then right after, she tries to stalk him home...And another for you, "I waited for Laurent behind the dumpster on Ocean Avenue, but he never came."O.o

When we were walking out of the cafeteria, it started to pour again. Tears for Laurent, I thought. Luckily, I had my umbrella with me, so Agatha and I crowded under it as we ran to our locker. Some of the other kids weren’t so lucky. They got drenched. The sky was grumbling a lot and I even saw a flash of lightning. I couldn’t help but wonder what it was so angry about. Maybe it was frustrated like me that Laurent wasn’t in school.

I received a copy for review from the author. All thoughts are my honest opinion!

  2. That really sucks! I hate not finishing a book, but I hate it even more if the book has nothing appealing. I need character development in books too, to keep the story more engaging. And I can see why the "romance" would annoy you. I haven't even read the book and I find it annoying! lol ;p

Thanks for the honest review, Janina! :)
