Regan Edison has just moved from California, to enter her first year at Georgia Liberty College, the place where jacked up Chevy trucks and hunting are a way of life. Regan hopes to start a new life for herself and she thinks that Georgia is just the place to do it. That is until she meets an unexpected stranger.
Colter Hayes is a member of the Collectors, a group of wrongfully punished lost souls. Colter and the rest of his team, Finn, Kaiden and Devon, work for the Requiem Council who pass judgment on those souls that are neither tagged for Heaven nor Hell. The Council has charged the Collectors with finding the lost in exchange for a chance at redemption.
When an ex-councilmember known to pass Retribution on lost souls sets his sights on Regan, the Requiem Council dispatches the Collectors to Georgia to work as protectors for Regan. The Collectors must fight to save Regan from a fate they know all too well, but can they work to earn back their chance at redemption or are their fates sealed forever?
Who is meant for Heaven?
Who is meant for Hell?
And who is just lost?
I have an inner struggle with Retribution because I enjoyed the overall point of the story, but there were some aspects that I didn't enjoy as well. I struggled with rating this book, but I finally settle upon three stars because I do want to give the sequel a try. The main character Regan is a freshman in college and decided to go to a school across the country, from California to Georgia. She's barely gotten the chance to settle in before things start getting crazy for her. When it comes to Retribution I thought the book did have some great action packed scenes, but I do feel as though some of the things in the story was not touched on enough. Retribution does switch povs, but the main pov is with Regan.

In this book, we meet four guys who are there to protect Regan from the Exiles that are trying to kill her for her soul. Colter, Kaiden, Finn, and Devon were some fun characters and each one of them brought a different personality to the book. Colter, of course, was my favorite of the four. He has that personality that I can't help but love. The other guys were great as well and I loved the friendship that was developed between them all.

I enjoyed the story and I flew through it. It was fast paced and simple to grasp, but my main issue and the reason I drop the rating was Regan. I could not connect with her. She annoyed me from the very beginning. She was whinny and her character was very hot and cold. I started getting really frustrated as I was reading the story. One minute she's fine and then the next she's all bitchy. Also, the romance of the book was not that great. Once the connection develop between the final guy it started to get good. But from the beginning of the book Regan was a flip flopper. One minute she likes Colter, but then the next she's flirting and hanging out with Kaiden. Insert Max, and she's dancing all up on him at parties and it was just so frustrating. By the end of the book she FINALLY settled for one guy and things were good, but before that it was a mess.

Overall, the story was okay. If my annoyance for Regan wasn't so strong I would have given the book a higher rating. I am very curious to see what happens in the sequel so I do want to check that out.

  1. 3 stars is a great middle way for reads that you found good yet had many issues with them. I'm glad you enjoyed Colter as a character ;) And yay for a good pace. I'm sorry you had to go through all that.. confusion with Regan O.o At least she finally stuck with one of them!

  2. Gah, Regan sounds like a wreck all right. You were far more forgiving and generous than me because if I were you I would have dropped it like a hot potato.

  3. I'm glad that you still gave the book 3 stars and you're still willing to read the next installment despite having many reservations with the novel. It's also a problem for me when I can't connect with the main character and it would definitely make my reading experience really terrible.

  4. It's hard to fully enjoy the book when you don't connect with the characters. So yeah it's hard to rate those books too. I'm glad that you enjoyed this one enough to read the sequel. Great review, Janina :)

  5. The fast paced nature sounds like it would overcome the issues for me as well to enjoy even if not madly in love with the book

  6. Glad this one was a fast paced read for you but your struggle with the MC is something thats convinced me this one just isn't for me. If an mc is annoying and i cant connect with her i end up dislking the book.
Lovely review, hopefully you enjoy your next read more.

  7. The idea of this story sounds really good, but I just really don't like it when annoying main characters mess up an otherwise great book!

  8. It's never good when a characters is all fine then turns bitchy in some parts. I usually try to steer clear of those types of books. But I like the plot of the book and I'm glad you tried this one out Janina!

    Happy Reading
